School Computers

Well, I've seen some complaining about this, and I'm gonna have to say: This subject won't be changed for some time on the following reasons:

• The macs are a relatively new purchase compared to the last thing the school had
  
• The school is with 'classrooms of the future' - which uses macbooks, they cost around 1k dollars a piece
  
• The current macs that we have would simply go to waste if the school is to buy some new ones, which they are still usable.

So this topic is like a dead one, unless anyone can pop up a reason why to change them other than 'mac sucks'.

Though I utterly despise using their MACs, I agree that there really is no good enough reason to replace them. They seem to be sufficient to use in English classes, for example, when you aren't using any advanced applications.
The fact that there has to be two seperate networks because that of the MACs can't connect to the IBMs that the Business department uses, and that MACs are just generally annoying may limit the EASE of the use of technology in school, but it does not actually limit what we can do with it.

Well I think that the macs are alright.
I'd like to see them make it so files can transfer between the Macs and PC Windows,
But there are ways around that,
Namely email and flash drives.

But what I do see a problem with is the blocking of certain websites,
Such as, but not limited to:

"Non-Traditional Religions and Occult and Folklore"
Defined by websense (Our schools blocking server) as "Sites that provide information about or promote religions not specified in Traditional Religions or other unconventional, cultic, or folkloric beliefs and practices."

"Sex Education"
Defined as "Sites that offer information about sex and sexuality, with no pornographic intent.'

"Web Hosting"
Defined as "Sites of organizations that provide hosting services, or top-level domain pages of Web communities. "

"Web Chat"
Defined as "Sites that host Web chat services or that support or provide information about chat via HTTP or IRC."

"Social Networking and Personal Sites"
Defined as "Sites chiefly devoted to personal expression by individuals (as in diaries or personal blogs) or small groups, often but not necessarily involving multiple links to similar sites."

"Tasteless"
Defined as "Sites with content that is gratuitously offensive or shocking, but not violent or frightening. Includes sites devoted in part or whole to scatology and similar topics or to improper language, humor, or behavior."


I believe that these have no place being blocked, as some are educational, others are subjective, and just about all do no harm to the users and are not actually in appropriate for school,
And blocking them is just uncalled for.
If a kid wants to use them,
They'll go around the blocker server.

However I also recognize that some categories still deserved to be blocked, such as pornography, etc.

Yeah the blocking system McDowell has, has some pretty ridiculous blocked stuff. This is a dead post, unless we wish to discuss the pros and cons of having all the computers under one brand. Not going to happen. Whats the final statement?

At least the district could be more consistent with the quoted statement. Every A Day I go from Mrs. Zeisloft, who has the newer eMacs, to Mr. Graham, who has the old iMacs. There isn't enough RAM in those computers to allow us to do anything, pretty much

Which is why they won't "Fix" it.
Because we've abused it.
But computers are a legit topic to at least discuss.
